Jason Giambi was still wearing a Yankees uniform last night, he was still their designated hitter and he was still immersed in a maelstrom about what he might or might not have put into his muscular body to help him as a player.

But after Giambi met with representatives from the commissioner’s office yesterday in New York to discuss his tacit admission of steroid use in a USA Today article last week, he seemed a bit relieved. Giambi emphasized how he agreed to the meeting and how he hoped his cooperation would produce a positive outcome.

“I was willing to go in there and talk to them, and hopefully good things will come out of it,” he said. “But I don’t know. We’re waiting for a response.”

A former top Justice Department aide testified on Wednesday that she had “crossed the line” in considering the political beliefs of applicants for nonpartisan legal jobs and suggested that earlier testimony by Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales and another top official about the dismissals of federal prosecutors may have been flawed.

Monica M. Goodling, the former Justice official, told a House panel that she regretted favoring applicants with Republican credentials for lower level prosecutor jobs or prestigious postings at Justice headquarters, actions that could violate federal employment laws.

“I may have gone too far in asking political questions of applicants for career positions and I may have taken inappropriate political considerations into account,” Ms. Goodling said. “And I regret those mistakes.”

Lindsay Lohan and new boyfriend Calum Best had a furious public “screamfest.”

Lohan reportedly lost her temper with the womanizing Best after he was seen flirting with several girls behind her back in Cipriani Downtown.

The couple were overheard arguing in the Soho Grand hotel’s lobby after returning from a night out.

A source claimed, “Calum was collecting numbers from all the models every time Lindsay’s back was turned. It sent Lindsay over the edge. The next evening they had a screamfest in their penthouse which ended up in the lobby.”
