300 Comes in 2nd - Joel Siegel is Pissed and So am I

300-movie.jpg“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” bests “300″ at the weekend box office. Does it mean anything? NO!

“Turtles Make Soup of 300″ is the way E! Online headlined its story, typical of the way the popular press handled the weekend box office results. More evidence to support my theory that the popular press shouldn’t report on the weekend box office.

Is “TNMT” a better movie than “300″? A more popular movie than “300″? Will it do better at the box office than “300″? Will its success this past weekend have any effect on future Hollywood films? Four
NOs.

In case you have been a hermit for the last two weeks, here the synopsis:
In the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, King Leonidas and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite against their Persian enemy, drawing a line in the sand for democracy. Based on Frank Miller’s (Writer of Sin City) graphic novel about the Battle of Thermopylae.

Check out the 300 Trailer, it’s pretty cool.

Horror Films Abound, Marketing Called into Question

the-reaping-poster.jpg"Posters for Warner Brothers’ film“The Reaping,” about deadly plagues, and the torture-filled “Captivity,” from After Dark Films and Lionsgate, appear on bus shelters on Pico Boulevard between two elementary schools. A fright puppet from Universal’s “Dead Silence” peers menacingly from a construction-site wall by a children’s center in Santa Monica. A few blocks away, a large billboard promoting Sony Pictures’“Perfect Stranger” overlooks the campus of the Crossroads School, the daytime home for the offspring of many in the film industry.

All rated R for violence, among other traits, the films belong to what has become an annual winter-spring crop of horror and suspense. But the harvest is trickier than usual this year, as Hollywood braces for a new government review of the marketing of violent entertainment to the young."

I’m generally not too enthusiastic about government regulation, especially of entertainment marketing. However, it seems the movie studios should take a little more care in where their advertising is placed, or a few careless marketers are going to bring unwanted scrutiny to the industry that will just waste everyone’s time and money.

What do you think?

————————————-

The Reaping looks pretty cool. Thousands of years ago there was a series of bizarre occurrences that many believed to have been the Ten Biblical Plagues. No one thought they could happen again. A former Christian missionary, (played by Hilary Swank) who specializes in debunking religious phenomena, investigates a small town which seems to be suffering from the 10 biblical plagues. Release date: April 5. Official Site.

Sin City 2 Shooting This Spring

sin-city-jessica-alba.jpgFrank Miller Says Sin City 2 Will Shoot This Spring. During an interview promoting 300 — on which he served as executive producer — Frank Miller told Sci Fi Wire that Sin City 2 is on schedule and he’s hoping production will begin this Spring. There’s an ‘Old Town Girls’ story, and a new one features Nancy Callahan [Jessica Alba] in a very different, very scary role. I’m hoping we’ll start in late spring…more

Here’s another one for you.

Music & Lyrics - Guys, take your chick to see this

music-lyrics.jpgSo I did just what the movie marketers (and my chick) wanted me to do. I went to see the new movie, Music & Lyrics, on it’s opening night - Valentine’s Day. In my mind, I was kind of going under protest. I mean, it’s a "chick-flick", as it’s a guy meets girl and they fall in love story, plus it has Hugh Grant whom my girl just adores…*sigh*.

I figured, whatever, let me make her happy and take her to the movies. Dudes - take your woman to see this movie. It’s actually very good. You will get credit for a "chick-flick" and enjoy the movie at the same time. For the Horndog in all of us there is the sexy, slutty "Britney Spears / Christina Aguilera" type character of "Cora Corman" played by Haley Bennett. It looks like that’s her first movie as they don’t list anything else at the IMDB.

The ’80’s Pop references are "cheesy-parody" funny. The chemistry between Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore is great, and the story is cute, fun and entertaining.

Hannibal Rising Released

hannibal-rising.jpg

Hannibal Rising had it’s theatrical release last Friday.

Plot: The story begins in Eastern Europe at the desperate end of World War II. For many it was no longer a conflict of nations but one of individual survival – at any cost. A young Hannibal watches from only steps away as his parents’ violently die, leaving his cherished young sister in his care. This horrific moment will soon pale in comparison to the atrocities he is forced to witness and perhaps survive as a result of.
