Rush Still Delivers

rush.jpg

The rock band at Madison Square Garden on Monday night was a trio that got together in the 1970s and has been selling out arena dates on a world tour this year. It has a bass-playing, reedy-voiced lead singer, a briskly virtuosic drummer and a guitarist who spills echoey chords over their riffs. Its songs contemplate the state of the world.

No, it wasn’t the Police — it was Rush, the stalwart Canadian band that didn’t have to reunite. Without a string of pop hits or much that’s even remotely glamorous, Rush has maintained one of rock’s biggest cult followings.

Rush has improbable ingredients for popularity. The music is grounded in progressive rock, with odd-meter riffs from Geddy Lee on bass and Neil Peart on drums below the guitarist Alex Lifeson’s power chords and pealing arpeggios. Once scorned, progressive rock has started a comeback

I just have to say that Rush is freakin’ awesome. Period.

Sex Pistols join Led Zeppelin on comeback trail

sex-pistols.jpgThe Sex Pistols have joined the growing list of 1970s bands hitting the comeback trail, after announcing a one-off gig in London later this year.

The four surviving members of the band will take to the stage at the Brixton Academy on Nov 8 to mark the 30th anniversary of their album Never Mind The Bollocks.

Their announcement follows the ticket scramble sparked by last week’s news that Led Zeppelin are to play a charity gig at London’s O2 arena, also in November.

The Sex Pistols - the most celebrated and notorious British punk band - split in 1978 shortly before the death of bassist Sid Vicious.

They last reformed at a poorly-received show in Crystal Palace in south London in 2002.

Frontman John Lydon - formerly known as Johnny Rotten - told music website NME.com that "all of Britain" was welcome to attend the Brixton show, which coincides with the re-release of their first album.

"Maybe it’s because we’re all Londoners, but there would be no Sex Pistols without dear old London town," he said.

Rihanna’s Short Hair is Sexy

rihanna.jpg

I’m not usually into short hair, but there are two chicks that pull it off pretty well lately; Victoria Beckham, and Rihanna. The 19-year-old, whose 2007 single Umbrella spent ten weeks at No. 1 in Britain, took MTV’s Single Of The Year award, beating the likes of Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West and Amy Winehouse. Rihanna also scooped the Video Of The Year award, also for Umbrella. "Wow! Video Of The Year," she said. "This was definitely the most important one for me of the night . . . the most unexpected for me."

Here’s some hot pics of Rihanna at the VMA awards.

Pamela Anderson at the VMA Awards Looking Boner-iffic

I’m sure you all heard about the fight between Kid Rock and Tommy Lee at the VMA awards. The latest is that Kid Rock says it was because Tommy was sending him nasty emails during the divorce with Pam, but had nothing to do with fighting over her. Story on RTE Entertainment.

Based on these pics, it looks like Tommy Lee won anyway … and so did my boner.

I like hot chick singers. There is just something extra sexy about a sexy girl singing … and here we have five babes singing. Nice! I want to have sex with them while they are singing. Maybe they are the new Spice Girls?

Check out the official Girls Aloud Website Here

I’m not sure which one I like best yet. I like the Victoria Beckham look for the hairdo that Sarah Harding has and Nicole Roberts hot "do" is reminiscent of Bridget Fonda here - scroll down to the middle of the page.

Following weeks of intense speculation by fans and the news media, a concert promoter announced yesterday that the three surviving members of Led Zeppelin - Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones - would play a concert in London on Nov. 26. Jason Bonham, the son of John Bonham, who died in 1980, will fill in for his father on drums.

That sounds pretty cool … I hope. I hope they have been practicing. Who’s older, these guys or the Rolling Stones? It’s like Senior Citizens on Tour. LOL.

Amy Winehouse Says Yes to Rehab?

amy-winehouse.jpg

Amy Winehouse has some awesome music with a powerful, soulful, sexy voice. I think her music is classy and hip, and a breath of fresh air over all the other crap out there. Too bad she seems to be having some issues. Does someone really need to have pain in their life and do lots of drugs and alcohol to sound this cool? I tried lots of drugs and alcohol, and I don’t sound anywhere near as sexy, sultry and cool as Amy Winehouse. Maybe I just don’t have enough pain in my life? Don’t worry, my ex-wife is working on that.

MTV reports:

As Amy Winehouse continues to recuperate from her hospital visit last week — which her representatives insist was due to exhaustion but some media sources claim was a drug overdose — she has canceled another festival appearance.

After pulling out of shows in Norway and Denmark last week and two scheduled opening slots for the Rolling Stones this week, a spokesperson said Thursday that Winehouse has pulled the plug on her Saturday and Sunday slots at the V Festival this weekend in England.

"Amy Winehouse is putting all her touring commitments for this month on hold until further notice in order to address her health issues," read a statement from spokeswoman Tracey Miller. "Amy will now not be performing at this weekend’s V Festival in Chelmsford and Staffordshire. Her family has requested that the media respect Amy’s privacy at this time. There will be no further comment."

Whatever it is, I hope she gets better soon and keeps performing and making music.

Prince is the Prince of Music

prince.jpg

You have to give Prince a lot of credit for being able to stay on top of the music world for 20 years. It is safe to say that he can be seen as "gimiky", and gimiky doesn’t usually last. I think the guy is a musical and marketing genius.

I’VE got lots of money!” Prince exults in “The One U Wanna C,” a come-on from his new album, “Planet Earth” (Columbia). There’s no reason to disbelieve him. With a sponsorship deal here and an exclusive show there, worldwide television appearances and music given away, Prince has remade himself as a 21st-century pop star. As recording companies bemoan a crumbling market, Prince is demonstrating that charisma and the willingness to go out and perform are still bankable. He doesn’t have to go multiplatinum — he’s multiplatform.

He has caused a stir by distributing his new album free in a British newspaper, one of many ways he is showing that he thinks differently about the music business.

Check out a great article about Prince in The NY Times, which also has links to short MP3 clips of his songs; 1999, Little Red Corvette, Purple Rain, When Doves Cry, Let’s Go Crazy, Raspberry Beret, Sign o’ the Times, and Diamonds and Pearls.

Kelly Clarkson Doesn’t Make Music for Old Geezers

kelly_clarkson.jpg

Kelly Clarkson insisted on recording her own songs on her third album, while BMG/RCA boss Clive Davis - mindful of needing hits - wanted her to sing tunes written by others. But in the August issue of Blender, Clarkson says she told Davis: “I don’t know you very well, and I am not a bull-[bleep]er. I get [that] you don’t like the album. You’re 80; you’re not supposed to like my album.” She also said: “I literally got told to my face that it wouldn’t sell more than 600,000 copies. And I got lied to. One reason I don’t like working with people at the label is that they lie . . . If you’re going with the flow and not fighting, that’s settling. I can’t take that. Life is just too short to be a pushover.” But meanwhile, Clarkson fired her manager and cancelled her summer tour because of slack ticket sales.
