Mr. Bean’s Holiday

‘Mr. Bean’s Holiday.’ Comedy about a naive tourist blundering his way through France. With Rowan Atkinson, Willem Dafoe. Director: Steve Bendelack (1:29). G: Mild language. At area theaters.

There are certain elements in life that you either have a taste for, or you don’t. Like coffee. Cats. And Mr. Bean.

If you’re a fan of Rowan Atkinson’s aggressively inept man-child, then you’ll be pleased to know that the character’s latest comic outing devoutly follows the formula developed years ago. On the other hand, if you’ve never been particularly fond of Atkinson’s brand of slapstick, you certainly won’t be converted by this trifle.

The premise, which is little more than a line on which to hang the actor’s well-worn shtick, finds the wide-eyed Mr. Bean heading to the South of France for vacation. Along the way, he meets a little boy (Max Baldry) who needs to reunite with his father in Cannes. Since Bean loses his wallet early on, they have to get creative, hitching rides, earning money and extracting themselves from a variety of misadventures as best they can.
